House Bill 1037

Scope: Altering the fee for specified vessel manufacturer's and vessel dealer's licenses; altering the expiration date for a temporary certificate of boat number; subjecting specified vessels operated by sail to specified vessel numbering requirements; etc.

Status: House Hearing

Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has proposed to increase boat registration fees in Maryland. The current registration fee is $24 for two years, with exemptions for sail and human-powered-only vessels along with all vessels less than 16’ and powered by less than 7 ½ hp. Set in 1983, this fee adjusted for inflation would now be approximately $54 for two years.

DNR proposes the following:

Boat Length Current Fee Proposed Fee Active October 1, 2012 Proposed Fee Active October 1, 2012
upto 16' and less 7.5hp $0.00 $25.00 $50.00
upto 16' and over 7.5hp $24.00 $25.00 $50.00
16' to 32' $24.00 $75.00 $125.00
32' to 45' $24.00 $125.00 $250.00
45' to 65' $24.00 $250.00 $500.00
65' and Over $24.00 $350.00 $700.00

In comparison, a 21’ boat costs $20-56 for 2 years registration in VA, DE, PA, NJ or NC.
